So, I’m tired of fragrance brands that aren’t pushing boundaries.
Connoisseurs like us want something different and unique that will set us apart from the crowd.
There has to be one brand that reinvents the wheel on every release.
And there is…
Tom Ford Colognes are so good and unique that some even consider them niche. This review will describe how they smell and perform. By the end, you’ll know which one is for you. If not all.
Let’s get started if you’re ready to spice up your fragrance collection.

#13 – Tom Ford Soleil Blanc
When it’s summertime, you want a scent that reminds you of the tropics. Our brains love to daydream about being whisked away to a Caribbean island.
Tom Ford Soleil Blanc can’t cure your daydreams but can be reminiscent.
This opening combination has a tropical vibe. Coconut-infused bergamot leads the opening and is wrapped in slightly sweet floral notes.
Soon, the bergamot fades, and more florals with a mix of fresh spices fill the void. The emphasis here is a fresh and delightful aroma.
As time passes, the florals only gain more strength. At this point, they’re significantly smooth and creamy. While in the background, sweet coconut lingers.
Once in the dry down is slight amber warmth and benzoin. Neither is prominent but adds just enough depth to the base.
For the rest of the wear, semi-sweet florals and lingering spice rest on the bed of warm base notes.
Indeed, a simple summer scent. The only downfall is the lack of performance. Right off the bat, the projection is intimate and will only last half a day, if that.
#12 – Tom Ford Neroli Portofino
Tom Ford has a way of reinventing the wheel. Before Neroli Portofino was released, neroli was not a commonly used note. But this is the scent that changed the game.
It used neroli so well that other brands started incorporating the note.
So, what does Tom Ford Neroli Portofino smell like?
Lemon and orange blossom lead with a big citrus blast; they are simple yet realistic. After a few minutes, it starts to smell like a fresh flower. Floral and green aromas add but never overpower the juicy citrus.
The floral nature comes from neroli which has a citrus quality.
The floral and citrus duo dominates for the rest of the wear. They get warmer as the scent matures. Once neroli fades, so does most of the scent.
So, who can wear Tom Ford Neroli Portofino, and how well does it perform?
Tom Ford Neroli Portofino truly is a unisex fragrance. It may seem like the white florals add a feminine nature, but they don’t. They emphasize summer sunniness and cleanliness.
If you’ve smelt any of the Prada L’Homme line before, that is the extent of the florals here.
As for performance, this is exclusively a summer scent.
#11 – Tom Ford Mandarino di Amalfi
Cheers to the best Tom Ford summer scent. Mandarino di Amalfi is a great scent in the summer to spray on and go.
Overall, the initial top notes are nothing extreme. Equal parts juicy lemon and grapefruit lead the opening. They are mainly sweet and provide a familiar bright and zesty aroma.
As the scent develops, things get slightly more exciting. An herbal spice sits underneath the citruses from early on. My nose picks up a variety of greens with a black pepper hue.
I can’t pick out the notes specifically, but my guess would be mint and basil.
Progressively these greens gain a soapy quality. In the grand scheme of things, the greens are heavier than the citruses. But here, they never overpower them.
Once in the mid, there is more floral dominance, a nice citrus orange addition, and an array of flowers. The greenness has carried over and still retains its spicy tone.
As the scent dries down, it is primarily a mix of greens with spice nuances and fresh florals. Never is this a feminine scent, but rather ultra-clean and summery.
The performance is above average for a summer scent. Citruses fade pretty quickly. And as you can tell, they last for a while in Mandarino di Amalfi. This isn’t a giant projector, but it pushes out far enough for others to catch wafts.
#10 – Tom Ford Black Orchid
Maybe you’re somebody with a love or hate personality. Well then, Black Orchid is for you. It has a decisive scent and is bound to turn heads.
The scent is rich, dark, and floral. The opening is intense and overwhelmingly profound. If you don’t wear Black Orchid, it will wear you.
An earthy truffle and floral ylang-ylang lead the opening. The intensity mellows down after additions of warmth and spice. Mexican chocolate adds to the truffle and creates an earthy gourmand nature.
The rest of the wear is equal parts earthy chocolate and strong florals.
A lot is going on in Black Orchid, but the notes are so well-blended that it seems simple. It may be hard to imagine, but Black Orchid is a dirty scent. The earthy tinge comes across as very sexy.
This scent is not for everyone but for the right person. It’s show-stopping.
Black Orchid is not an ultra-strong fragrance but still has outstanding performance. With only a few sprays, it lasts 8 hours and projects an arm’s length during that period.
As for when to wear, Black Orchid is exclusively a wintertime fragrance. The sheer intensity of the notes would be too much in the high heat. Not only would it be nauseating for you, but it would also be painful for others.
I have a full review of Tom Ford Black Orchid if you want to learn more.
#9 – Tom Ford Beau de Jour EDP
Here’s a fragrance for men who want simple and masculine. Isn’t that the epitome of a real man? Now I’m not here to have that debate, but I can tell you that Beau de Jour EDP smells fantastic.
It’s known as being a fougere. If you are familiar, this means fern-like, usually airy and aromatic.
A hefty dose of lavender leads the opening with a degree of brightness. It is undoubtedly prominent but not overpowering; I find it quite soothing.
Rather than leave a scent trail off you, it envelops you with a calming, masculine cloud.
After a while, Beau de Jour EDP adds mint and geranium. Both come across as fresh and slightly spicy. Together the pair have a subtle herbaceous quality that works perfectly with lavender.
The top notes mix and mingle for a while until the lavender loses strength. Green basil fills the void. Amplifying the already subtle herbal qualities and fresh spice.
At this point, all notes are equally split, each accounting for 25% of the smell. The notes are in equal parts, yet freshness is emphasized.
Lavender moves further in the background as the scent dries down. While this happens, a patchouli and amber backbone is building in its place.
They give the lingering green, earthy spices a decent structure to project off for the rest of the wear.
This is an excellent performer. It does get a little weak in the winter, but as long as you don’t wear it on the coldest days, you should be fine.
#8 – Tom Ford Fougere d’Argent
I think this is the least well-known of all the scents on the list. What do you think?
Right from the opening, multiple things are going on. A large dose of ginger is at the forefront, while lavender plays second fiddle.
It is not in the background, just not as dominant as ginger. Together this duo is clean and spicy. The ginger can get intense and sharp for some noses but mellows down over time.
There’s a prominent duo in the background, which is the second thing going on in the opening. Wood and light citruses sit underneath the dominant opening duo.
When the top notes work together, they have a typical gentlemen’s cologne vibe.
Quickly after the first spray is an addition of tonka bean; it will mellow ginger. It provides a shell that rounds off the opening and smoothes the rough edges.
Once this happens, orange citrus can become more present. It pairs well with lavender and ginger.
Orange and ginger fade as the dry-down develops. Lavender, tonka bean, and other woody note waste no time by filling the void.
For the rest of the wear, this is most of the scent. It finishes off as smooth and woody with a nuance of powdery spice.
One of the best aspects of Fougere D’Argent is its versatility and performance. It is a true gentleman’s fragrance. It lasts an entire workday and projects politely.
Yet, it’s all-season wear even in the coldest parts of winter and hottest parts of summer. You just may need to moderate your spray count during these times.
#7 – Tom Ford Grey Vetiver
Grey Vetiver is the best Tom Ford perfume for spring. It was released in 2009 and is known for its sunniness and elegance.
Bright and uplifting grapefruit awakens your senses and sparkles off your skin. In the first few minutes, grapefruit takes the lead. Yet, vetiver is still prevalent in the background.
Now, this is a vetiver scent done well. It never comes off as piercing or assaulting my nose, as some vetivers do.
Instead, it is green with soapy cleanliness.
Over time vetiver gains more and more prominence. Always maintaining a smooth and creamy balance with grapefruit. Into the mid, Grey vetiver picks up slightly green and herbaceous spicy qualities. They are subtle but still present.
Woody notes emerge in the dry-down. Mostly, they are there to add a masculine depth to the grapefruit and vetiver mixture.
The performance is of a gentleman-like quality and has all-season versatility. You can spray heavily in colder temperatures. But for a few reasons, you’re better off saving this one for the spring and summer.
#6 – Tom Ford Tuscan Leather
Tuscan Leather is easy to describe. It is so simple. It may be most notable because it inspired Tom Ford Ombre Leather.
An enormous dose of leather leads the opening. You must enjoy leather if you want to wear this men’s cologne. It is loud and bold but always maintains its richness and quality.
Touches of saffron spice and juicy raspberry try to offset the leather’s intensity.
However, they only take away the rough “edges.” Making the bulk of the scent enjoyable.
For nearly the entire wear, it is just leather. There are subtle additions of smoke and amber warmth in the dry down. Yet, both sit in the background as raspberry and saffron did.
The performance is outstanding if you like strong scents. You’re sure to be remarked as a masculine man when you wear this. As for wear, it may be too much in the high heat. But if it works for you, then go for it.
#5 – Tom Ford Noir de Noir
Tom Ford Noir de Noir is valentine’s day in a bottle. It was released in 2007 and is described by Tom Ford as an Intense and sexual awakening.
The opening is dominated by roses. It is equal parts sweet and dirty. The dirty nature comes from patchouli. It has an earthy spice that is not prominent but adds a dynamic facet to the opening.
In the background, saffron amplifies these spicy accents, but you can’t smell the note specifically.
The one thing I will highlight about the earthy and dirty nature is that it is never “gross.” It doesn’t smell like you haven’t taken a shower. Instead, it is very alluring and seductive.
Most of the wear is denoted by sweet and dirty rose notes. Over time, it gets more floral, spicy, and sweet. All this happens while sitting on a subtle and sweet bed of oud.
The performance is perfect for a date or formal occasion. As for wear, it is best in the colder temperatures and nighttime.
#4 – Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille
Now the list starts getting into the best of the best. Tobacco Vanille is no stranger to grabbing attention and performing well all day.
Dominating the opening is a heavy dose of spicy tobacco. After a few moments, it is paired with vanilla and fruits that are primarily sweet. Vanilla progressively gets more robust over the wear.
But the general idea in the opening is dark, rich, and gourmand with a smoky flair. Don’t worry about the smokiness; the spices tone it down.
The sweetness carries over to the mid but never gets too sticky. Instead, it is pretty bold and charming. As the top notes settle down, vanilla moves to the forefront.
As this happens, a variety of spices and chocolatey woods accompany vanilla. Even in the mid, the scent has a gourmand nature but does it differently.
Equal parts tobacco and semi-sweet vanilla are most prominent in the dry down. They are dense and have a semi-powdery tone. Both are supported by a gourmand nature for the rest of the wear.
The performance of Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille is strong. It lives on your skin and fills the room while it’s there. It is a cologne exclusively for formal occasions and winter wear.
#3 – Tom Ford Oud Wood
So, you need the best fragrances for men but also want it to be an easy-to-wear oud. There are plenty of oud colognes to choose from, but how about for beginners?
Tom Ford Oud Wood is a perfect choice. Many ouds can get heavy and decisive. In this case, Oud Wood always stays well-blended and pleasant.
Just because it’s easy to wear doesn’t make it a bad fragrance. It made it on this list and can still compete with anything you throw at it.
Prevalent Oud leads the opening and goes for a smooth, woody quality. It is warm and spicy, making the darkness of the Oud smell inviting. Lingering in the background is spicy cardamom.
Oud stays consistently prevalent as the scent develops while woody accords gain strength. Spices always linger, adding an awakening quality.
Once in the dry down, sweet vanilla smoothes over the heavy Oud and woods. For the rest of the wear, it’s an excellent balance between warm spices and masculine tones.
Let’s talk about performance.
Unfortunately, it is below average. The longevity with 4 sprays is 5 – 6 hours and has near intimate projection. Usually, warm temperatures help light projectors.
However, with the darkness and density of Oud Wood, it doesn’t work, limiting it to a winter and fall scent.
If you’re looking for a more affordable beginner Oud fragrance. Versace Pour Homme Oud Noir provides a fantastic alternative.
#2 – Tom Ford Ombre Leather
Tom Ford has a thing for commanding high prices. In the case of Ombre Leather, he made it more accessible to the masses. Initially, it was released as a private blend (expensive).
After 2 years, it was rebottled and rereleased as a signature blend (less expensive).
It was inspired by Tom Ford Tuscan Leather. Yet, it took leather and made it cool and affordable again.
The opening is intense and realistic. It smells like a new pair of luxury leather gloves. The first five minutes of the scent is a strong leather accord.
At this point, white florals are introduced. They dial down the intensity of the leather and are the transition into the dry down.
Here there are nuances of woody notes, but it is mostly the addition of an animalic quality.
It may be hard to imagine leather smelling fun and interesting, but Ombre Leather does it. Even though it is inspired by Tuscan leather, nothing else smells like it.
It is incredibly unique for making a masculine sexy aroma out of leather and florals.
This is one of the more affordable Tom Ford colognes and the best to spice up your collection.
Performance on my skin is above average. It lasts 8 – 9 hours and projects an arm’s length for a few of those. As for when to wear, it is almost exclusively a cold-weather cologne.
You could stretch it into spring, but it would have to be cool out. I would wear this for any occasion; it works for all.
I have a full review of Tom Ford Ombre Leather if you want to learn more. In the review, I describe Tuscan Leather as well.
#1 – Tom Ford Noir Extreme
Maybe you’re a fragrance connoisseur, or perhaps you’re not. Noir Extreme can impress anyone, even if it’s your 1000th cologne.
One of the main reasons for this is the addition of one unique note that you probably have yet to hear of.
Upon the first spray is an immediate sweet vanilla accord with a mix of well-blended spices and florals. The spices encase the vanilla and showcase it like a prize.
They are strong at first, but in 10-15 minutes, they give way to sweeter vanilla and a unique note.
The top notes of florals were the least prevalent but gave the opening a light juicy citric nature. At the same time as the spices transition to vanilla, the florals combine with ambery warmth. It’s an outstanding balance and gives the scent depth.
This all happens in about 15 minutes. Now you’re in the mid of the fragrance with sweet vanilla and kulfi, while ambery florals rest in the background.
If you are unfamiliar with kulfi, it is an Indian dessert. In this case, it comes across as a nutty vanilla ice cream. The nuttiness is similar to pistachio.
Into the dry down, the scent simplifies even further. It is all about the warm vanilla and amber with prevalent woody notes. The base isn’t anything crazy, but its more straightforward nature is delightful. Creamy and mature for the rest of the wear.
Now on to the performance and one of the better ones on this list. The scent has the potential to last til the next day on your skin and has a giant projection for hours. Yet, this supreme performance is a blessing and a curse.
It is simply too strong in the warmer months, limiting your wear to fall and winter. Now for situations, it is not everyday wear. Though it is the perfect show-stopping fragrance for a date or formal occasion.
My Experience With The Best Tom Ford Colognes
All of the above information is my experience with the best Tom Ford colognes. However, I keep it as objective as possible.
This way, you can objectively decide if this is a fragrance you want to purchase or if you’re comparing a few fragrances. Thus, this section is my subjective opinion.
Tom Ford fragrances are nothing but quality. It’s understandable why some argue that they are niche fragrances. The one thing about Tom Ford colognes is that they’re decisive and for a more sophisticated audience.
Some of the brand’s scents are beginner friendly, like Oud Wood. Yet, even then, Oud Wood probably won’t be a beginner’s first fragrance.
On the flip side, the Tom Ford brand can be fantastic when you want to start pushing boundaries. Ex: Black Orchid.
In short, I love the Tom Ford brand and appreciate its quality and often decisive fragrances.
How to Pick the Right Tom Ford Colognes for You
First, I recommend deciding when you want to wear your fragrance and what it is for. Do you want a warm-weather, cold-weather or all-season fragrance?
If you know this, go ahead and read the last paragraph of each fragrance, and it’ll tell you what the scents are best for.
So, you’ve decided on the season. What about the occasion? The infographics for each fragrance will tell you if these are for all occasions or special occasions.
If you want everyday wear, I’d recommend staying away from the ones that don’t say “all.”
Sure, you’re welcome to smell fantastic whenever and wherever, but a fragrance like Black Orchid is going to be too much for most situations.
If you’ve narrowed down the list this far, it’s as easy as just guessing which scent you’ll like the most. What are your favorite fragrances you’ve smelt?
Do any of those accords have comparable notes and accords to the Tom Ford fragrances you’re looking into?
Whichever scent you choose, you’ll be guaranteed a pleasant experience of the utmost quality.
