What Does YSL Opium Pour Homme Smell Like?
Upon the first spray, I am slapped in the face with sweetness. A close second behind comes spicy edges that showcase the sweetness. The most prominent notes are black currant and star anise.
They have a licorice aroma. If you’re unfamiliar, it’s a caramelized sweetness but not Twizzlers. In the mid, the spices continue to show their importance. They temper the intensity of the sweetness. There is not much development past the first few minutes until the dry down.
The dry down is led by sweet bourbon vanilla with powdery accents. In the background are resins and hints of warm cedar. The black currant is gone near the end of the wear; vanilla has obtained the sweetness. The rest of the wear is soft spices, vanilla with a warm resin, and cedar depth.

Opium Pour Homme lasts eight to ten hours on the skin with excellent projection. It pushes out six feet in the first few hours before receding to within arm’s length for the rest of the wear.
The scent trail is long and dense, especially near the end of the wear. Between the sillage and projection, this will definitely fill a room if you move around. This performance is with three sprays.
This is fall and winter wear. It needs cool temperatures to temper the sweetness and stop it from getting cloying. You’ll get five to six months of wear in a four-season climate.
As for the occasions, it is best for going out. It’s both a unique and alluring aroma but also a loud fragrance. It stands out enough for dates and formal occasions but will be overwhelming. The projection is the same reason it can’t be worn in the office or other close-quarter settings.
Lastly, mass appeal and likability are excellent for many reasons above. It is unique and quality.

I don’t have experience with this fragrance, but according to fragrantica, Penhaligon’s LP No.9 for Men is the most similar fragrance. The biggest similarity is the heavy emphasis on spices.

The final burning question is, is YSL Opium Pour Homme worth it? Maybe, it has excellent performance and a unique aroma. But the projection is also a downfall. I find this hard to wear; it’s so loud that I have to be careful when I wear it.
In short, I enjoy the fragrance. But make sure it’ll be wearable for you as it’s not necessarily an affordable fragrance.
