#5 – Salvatore Ferragamo Uomo Signature
The opening is strong and masculine but also sweet at the same time. In this case, the sweetness is more charming than playful. Orange and pink pepper are the first initial blast. Within a minute, the top notes are overtaken by more prominent notes.
These are cypress with cinnamon and tonka bean. Often times you will pick up a coffee note as well.
One thing that is for sure is that this scent changes after the first few minutes and throughout the middle. The different notes are constantly competing with one another.
Once in the dry down, the scent settles. It is still sweet with coffee, tonka bean, and leather. All work together, and none overpower each other. Leather is the heavier accord and acts as the base, while the other two work off with that. So, it’s an interesting scent but still masculine and mature.
The performance is slightly above average. It lasts eight hours on the skin. The projection has three phases. The first two hours, it pushes out really well, but after five, it sits closer to the skin. With the uniqueness of the scent, it could be perfect for going out, on dates, on formal occasions, etc…, but not office wear.
#4 – Hugo Boss The Scent Private Accord
The cocoa note is strong from the get-go. It pairs with a prominent ginger spice and pepper undertone. This gives it enough spice for a “punch,” but nothing that becomes overwhelming. In the background is a fruity nuance that lingers the entire wear.
The spiciness subsides in the heart while coffee fills its void. Together, coffee and cocoa create an exceptional gourmand mixture. Later, a dry vanilla pushes out the coffee accord, bringing patchouli.
The dry-down finishes with powdery cocoa and the intensity of warm spices. Woody patchouli, vanilla, and fruits remain but never amount to much. This is what you’ll smell for the rest of the wear.
This lasts eight hours on the skin with above-average projection. The first few hours are intense. After this period, it weakens to a light ambiance for the rest of the wear. As for occasions, it is fall and winter wear for special occasions.
#3 – Bond No. 9 New Haarlem
New Haarlem is the most delicious gourmand scent on the market. Many people describe it as “syrupy sexy pancakes.” It evokes memories and is excellent for cool weather.
Upon the first spray is a big blast of coffee. It comes across as rich, dark, and creamy. Combined with sweet vanilla, it has an almost syrup-like nature. The opening is all about these gourmands. Yet, a subtle nuance of cedar and lavender lingers in the background. Cedar adds depth, and lavender soothes the gourmands.
Lavender nuances still linger in the mid, but they have gotten more herbaceous. Vanilla also carries over and has picked up a powdery accent. The developing dry-down retains the gourmand nature. It is aided by rich ambery warmth and reemerging lavender.
New Haarlem is a tasteful scent. It can seem profound if you’ve never heard of or smelt a syrup-like fragrance. However, I can assure you that the sweetness is manageable.
New Haarlem is an excellent performer. It lasts 12+ hours on the skin with excellent projection. Its success is its downfall. Warm temperatures, especially high heat, are a big no-no for New Haarlem. However, it is an excellent choice in cold temperatures. As for occasions, it is exclusively for special events.
#2 – Halloween Man – X
Upon the first spray is an immediate blast of a dark-roasted coffee note. It dominates the opening for the first 10 -15 minutes, supported by boozy sweetness and leather.
This trio is a special “blackjack accord” the perfumer explicitly created for this fragrance. The whiskey smell is polite. It’s more about the sweetness and blend it brings to the coffee note than its actual smell. The leather sits in the background, adding a masculine depth to the opening.
The dark roasted coffee note remains prominent for the rest of the wear but weakens as the scent continues. After the opening period, a cinnamon and cardamom combination wash over the scent like a tidal wave.
Cinnamon blends with the coffee note, creating an almost spiced latte aroma. The cardamom is invigorating and attention-grabbing, like your typical cardamom note. Both are prevalent for the rest of the wear and add a warmer, spiced nature to the background.
The whiskey note gains strength in the dry-down and brings out more of its booziness that it lacked in the opening. Vanillic Tonka Bean combines with the whiskey note and creates gourmand goodness. The rest of the wear is warm, spicy coffee notes with a smooth vanillic whiskey combination.
Halloween Man X lasts seven hours on the skin with average projection. It pushes out two feet for multiple hours before receding, never becoming a skin scent. This is exclusively fall and winter wear. The projection is light, allowing it to be worn for all occasions.
#1 – Ralph Lauren Polo Red Extreme
It’s the most linear scent on the list. The opening begins with a juicy blood orange and an intense coffee note. This blend is exceptionally creamy. The addition of blood orange keeps it fresher and wearable. Sometimes, coffee notes become overwhelming because of their distinct aroma, but it’s always well-blended here.
There is no mid; it is all about creamier coffee notes. The base finishes with coffee, blood orange, and the addition of dark ebony wood. This is what you’ll smell for the rest of the wear.
The longevity is in the eight-hour range, with great projection. It pushes out an arm’s length for the first two to three hours. After this period, it recedes to a mild ambiance. This is exclusively fall and winter wear but great for all occasions.
Final Words
I love the smell of freshly brewed coffee in the morning, and that’s what I get with all of these. Coffee can often smell nauseating to others around you, but the other gourmand notes temper its intensity and create a delicious aroma.
After you try a coffee cologne, I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
