#5 – Serge Lutens Un Bois Vanille

The opening starts with a burnt sugar type accord, caramelized vanilla, and a decent dose of Coconut. The coconut milk is authentic. It smells natural and sweet but not sugary like you may find in other coconut colognes. This sweetness is amplified by the vanilla.

I can’t pinpoint where the burnt and caramelized faucets come from, but I’m confident it’s benzoin. Within a few minutes comes a dry woodiness to give the fragrance depth.

As Un Bois Vanille heads into the mid, it gets drier from the benzoin note, yet it never presents itself in full force. After an hour, the notes are an excellent blend. The vanilla has gotten significantly smoother.

There’s a shift from significantly sweet to significantly woody. There’s a sharpness to the woods from bitter almond, but like benzoin, it is elusive. The base is soft vanilla with a noticeable dose of musk and dominant dry woods.

This lasts seven hours on the skin with light to intimate projection. It pushes off the skin for two to three hours. After this period, it becomes a skin scent for the rest of the wear. It is a very intimate situation and hence when it’s best worn for. As for seasons, it is exclusively fall and winter.

#4 – Jean Paul Gaultier Le Beau Le Parfum

The opening is all about its strong tropical vibe. Pineapple comes out strong, while Coconut sits underneath. The accents are everything you’d envision from a tropical opening: juicy, creamy, and sweet. Lingering in the background is a light, spicy ginger kick.

Ginger was fleeting; within a few minutes, it dissipated. Not long after, pineapple and Coconut share the same fate. Pretty much everything from the top dissipates. The sweetness is retained but not to the same degree as at first.

Sandalwood and tonka bean fill the void of the top notes. Developing into the dry down, it consistently gets woodier. Dominated mainly by sandalwood. Light, warm amber rounds off the woodiness. Adding excellent balance to the already smooth sandalwood.

In the background are glimpses of sweet Coconut that survived til the end.

Le Beau Le Parfum lasts nine hours on the skin with above-average projection. It retains a multiple-foot scent bubble for a large portion of the wear. It recedes towards the end, never becoming a skin scent.

#3 – Tom Ford Soleil Blanc

This opening combination has a tropical vibe. Coconut-infused bergamot leads the opening and is wrapped in slightly sweet floral notes. Soon, the bergamot fades, and more florals with a mix of fresh spices fill the void. The emphasis here is a fresh and delightful aroma.

As time passes, the florals only gain more strength. At this point, they’re significantly smooth and creamy. While in the background, sweet Coconut lingers. Once in the dry down is slight amber warmth and benzoin. Neither is prominent but adds just enough depth to the base.

For the rest of the wear, semi-sweet florals and lingering spice rest on the bed of warm base notes.

Soleil Blanc lasts four to five hours on the skin with intimate projection. From the first spray, it only pushes out to a foot and stays light to a skin scent for the rest of the wear. This is exclusively spring and summer wear for all occasions.

#2 – Nishane Fan Your Flames

A coconut and rum combination leads the opening. I love that the Coconut never gets too sweet; it is expressed in a more woody and nutty fashion. Its woody accents amplify the subtle woody notes resting in the background.

Supporting the coconut and rum combination is a rich and dark tobacco note. It smells freshly rolled or harvested, not too dry like a powder. The opening’s overarching emphasis is Coconut, boozy rum, and tobacco. It’s an alluring and addictive trio, to say the least.

Coconut gets creamier into the mid, thanks to the additions of creamy tonka bean. The only other addition is a bitter, sharp oak moss peaking from the base. It’s an enjoyable touch, putting a shocking twist in a gourmand-y fragrance.

Rum and Coconut take the backseat in the dry down and for the rest of the wear. Still present but not dominant. Intense woody oak moss and cedar duo jump to the forefront with dark and rich tobacco. This is what you’ll smell for the rest of the wear.

This lasts eight to nine hours on the skin, with moderate projection for the first two hours. It pushes out an arm’s length. After this period, it settles on a one-foot ambiance for the rest of the wear. This is fall and winter wear for all occasions.

#1 – Creed Virgin Island Water

Equal parts lime and bergamot lead the opening. They are not the only citruses but the ones at the forefront. Traditionally, this combination would be sharp. Yet, a smooth coconut background calms the intensity.

After 15 minutes, the Coconut jumps to the front, bringing rum nuances. To my nose, the booziness is fleeting, resulting in occasional wafts for the rest of the wear.

After this, the notes mix and mingle until the scent adds hints of white florals. They are subtle and will lead Virgin Island Water to dry down. Here, it is predominantly coconut rum and a musky background. For the entire wear, it has a tropical twist and sweet touch. But to my nose, neither ever gets too overpowering.

Virgin Island Water lasts six hours on the skin with intimate projection. The entire wear has a light ambiance around you, only pushing out up to a foot. This is exclusively summer wear as it has no depth to last in cooler temperatures. As for occasions, it is best for casual wear.

Final Words

Are coconut colognes for men worth it? Yes, all of the fragrances on this list are great choices, no matter if you just like the smell of Coconut or want a unique and alluring fragrance.

In other coconut fragrances, their sweetness can often get cloying. However, all five of these are blended enough that overpowering sweetness never becomes a problem.

After you try a Coconut cologne, I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
