#5 – Select

The opening is led with a sweet and fruity emphasis. This is from a duo of tangy black currant and pineapple-like bergamot. The black currant is the most prominent note, giving the heavy fruity sweetness Aventus is known for. What you won’t find in the opening is a prominent citrus accord. Citric bergamot is drowned out by black currant.

Within a few minutes, the top notes weaken. A decent dose of ambroxan makes its way in, giving the scent depth. It’s interesting, as in Aventus and many other clones. A subtle smoky wood note would work its way in. This small change makes the scent more likable and attention-grabbing.

Ambroxan leads the dry-down, while musk is prominent in the background. This duo gives the scent a masculine nature. Yet, it is not the signature smoky birch and leather base in Aventus.

Mercedes-Benz Select lasts four hours on the skin with light projection. The projection is intimate and becomes a skin scent soon into the wear. This is exclusively spring, summer, and early fall wear. As for occasions, it is all.

#4 – Le Parfum

The opening starts with a bergamot and pink pepper duo while a watery, fresh, and juicy fruit-like accord lingers in the background. The overarching emphasis is fresh and diverse.

Within a few minutes comes a more pronounced violet leaf note with a greener, cleaner, and watery smell. Subtle pink pepper lingers in the background and gives a degree of sweetness but also helps break up the monotony of the wateriness of Violet Leaf.

The mid retains the prominent clean and watery smell with saffron and oud in the background. I love this addition as the oud is dark and earthy, the opposite of the dominant violet leaf.

The dry down finishes with a dominant oud, warm amber, and a lingering watery violet leaf. This is what you’ll smell for the rest of the wear.

This lasts seven to eight hours on the skin with above-average to light projection. It pushes out an arm’s length or more for the first three hours. After this period, it recedes to a mild ambiance for the rest of the wear. This is all-season wear for all occasions but shines at formal events.

#3 – Man Grey

This fragrance is everything and nothing at the same time. The opening starts with fleeting citruses and pink pepper. It is mainly spicy but has a degree of sweetness loud enough to grab attention but not overpower. In the background is a prominent but not overpowering amber accord.

Within a few minutes comes a shower-gel aroma paired with smoky incense—a somewhat similar idea to Versace Dylan Blue. The dry down comes quickly. The citruses fade with a prevalent amber and musky base. The rest of the wear is fresh, smoky ambroxan, amber, and musk.

The longevity is in the seven-hour range with above-average to mild projection. It pushes out an arm’s length for the first two to two and a half hours. After this period, it recedes to a light ambiance for the rest of the wear.

This is all-season and occasion wear. One of my favorite aspects is its easy-wearability and office-safe nature.

#2 – Select Night

The opening starts with a hefty dose of cardamom in the opening. There’s no denying that the spice is intense. It is tempered by a more prominent lavender and semi-sweet vanilla playing second fiddle.

Cardamom loses intensity in the mid, leaving room for more vanilla and lavender. At this point, they’re at equal parts. In the background is a slightly floral and fresh orange blossom atop a woody sandalwood.

The dry down is all about a woody fresh blend with prominent powdery vanilla. Cardamom and lavender nuances linger in the background. This is what you’ll smell for the rest of the wear.

The longevity is eight to nine hours with moderate projection. This pushes out well for the first two hours; after this period, it recedes to a light ambiance for the rest of the wear.

#1 – Club Black

The vanilla note is present on the first spray, accompanied by booziness. The first few minutes are about this sweet, vanilla, and boozy mixture. The scent profile lists bergamot as a top note, but I never catch a waft for the entire wear.

A smoky incense lingers as the scent develops, combining with the vanilla. There is a very alluring, sweet mystery when these notes combine. The rest of the wear is this note combination, sitting atop a warm resinous amber, giving the scent depth. It’s a very simple scent.

Club Black lasts eight to nine hours on the skin with average projection. It pushes out two to three feet for the first few hours before receding to the skin.

This can also be worn for all occasions. And seasons, exclusively fall and winter.

Final Words

The final burning question is, are Mercedes-Benz colognes worth it? Yes. I thoroughly enjoy the fragrances; they are just as good as the cars. One of their best aspects is their high quality for an affordable price. I recommend having one Mercedes-Benz cologne in your collection.

After you try a Mercedes-Benz cologne, I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
