#10 – Burberry London for Men
Think of the last time you were staring at your collection in search of a holiday scent. London for Men is the perfect choice and commonly referred to as “holidays in the bottle.”
The beginning is strong but fades quickly. Crisp citrus and lavender dominate the opening. Undertones of spicy cinnamon are sure to remind you of the holidays.
Progressing into the heart is a soft leather aroma and a floral scent. Most of the florals come from lavender lingering from the opening.
Warmth and luxury accompany the base. The leather lingered from the heart and was joined by tobacco and oakmoss. These scent accords don’t seem like holidays, but Burberry London smells like them.
Since it is “holidays in a bottle,” it is best suited for colder temperatures.
#9 – Maison Margiela Replica Jazz Club
A simple but unique scent. Neroli leads the opening with a floral citric tone. It keeps the scent fresh while nuances of pink pepper spice grab my attention in the background. They are sweeter than sharp. This fresh spice will lead into the mid.
The tobacco and boozy duo washes over the lighter top notes. The sweet rum note is in my face without restraint from the beginning.
After a few minutes, the boozy rum gets sweeter and warmer. The tobacco note plays second fiddle. It is not a ripe leaf or herbaceous. Instead, it heads in a woodier direction – what you’d smell in a Jazz Club.
The tobacco depth will take sweet rum into the dry down. At this point, the two will play second fiddle while powdery vanilla washes over. The rest of the wear is sweet rum and vanilla atop a tobacco depth.
The longevity is about average. The projection becomes intimate after only a few hours. It leans more toward cold-weather wear. This is one of the best going-out fragrances on the market.
#8 – Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille
Tobacco Vanille is no stranger to grabbing attention and performing well all day.
Dominating the opening is a heavy dose of spicy tobacco. After a few moments, it is paired with vanilla and fruits that are primarily sweet. Vanilla progressively gets more robust over the wear.
But the general idea in the opening is dark, rich, and gourmand with a smoky flair. Don’t worry about the smokiness; the spices tone it down.
The sweetness carries over to the mid but never gets too sticky. Instead, it is pretty bold and charming. As the top notes settle down, vanilla moves to the forefront.
As this happens, a variety of spices and chocolatey woods accompany vanilla. Even in the mid, the scent has a gourmand nature but does it differently.
Equal parts tobacco and semi-sweet vanilla are most prominent in the dry down. They are dense and have a semi-powdery tone. Both are supported by a gourmand nature for the rest of the wear.
The performance of Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille is strong. It lives on your skin and fills the room while it’s there. It is a cologne exclusively for formal occasions and winter wear.
#7 – Amouage Journey Man
The opening starts with a blast of Sichuan pepper, incense, and bergamot.
An interesting combination, to say the least. Dry tobacco, cardamom, and a leathery depth come within a few minutes. The overarching emphasis is spice and smoke.
The mid becomes more wearable. Bergamot adds a bright and juicy nature that smoothes out the intense dryness of the fragrance. It’s needed as dry and smoky tobacco becomes more and more prominent as the scent develops.
In the background is a subtle woody and aromatic addition of juniper berry while cardamom spice lingers.
The dry down has hints of leather here and there, but it’s drastically weakened since the opening. The final addition is a woodier and creamy tonka bean addition with warm amber.
The rest of the wear is smoky tobacco, spice, subtle leather, woods & musk tinges.
This lasts eight to nine hours on the skin with moderate projection. The first three to four hours, it pushes out an arm’s length before receding to a two-foot ambiance for the rest of the wear.
This is considerably wearable for an Amouage fragrance. This is spring, fall, and winter and for all occasions.
#6 – Serge Lutens Chergui
Suppose you have a winter date and want to catch them off guard. Chergui is the scent for you. It’s a very neutral unisex fragrance, so it has the potential to be a date show-stopper for men and women.
Upon the first spray, a fleeting dose of citruses transforms into a dry rose, tonka bean, and sensual honey. The rose provides a romantic touch.
Honey is the alluring element that pulls you in and makes you beg for more. Then, the creamy tonka bean glues it all together.
After a few minutes, there is a cloud of subtle tobacco, followed by amber and incense. This tobacco is interesting. Here, it is a green and ripe leaf rather than dried powder. The honey starts to get too sweet. Soon, resinous warmth reels it in.
An hour into the wear, I catch glimpses of wood. Little did I know they were preparing me for the base. In the dry down, the honey and musk notes are gone.
The rest of the wear is sweet amber and wood notes with nuances of green tobacco.
The performance is perfect for the occasion it is meant for. It will project loud enough that others will smell you but not consume them. As for the season, it’s strong in the spring and summer.
Yet, it’s genuinely sexy in the colder months.
#5 – Initio Side Effect EDP
It’s a simple scent, but it sure knows how to attract attention. The opening is all about a boozy rum with sweet vanilla and a decent dose of cinnamon spice sprinkled on top.
The rum is the only thing I can smell in the first minutes. It doesn’t go to the extent of someone drunk walking out of the bar, but it is intense. It’s a lot more of a gourmand and delicious accent for me.
It will pair perfectly with the vanilla and cinnamon spice to take the scent into the heart. Here, the rum will slowly fade while the tobacco slowly fills its void.
It takes about an hour or so, but eventually, the tobacco is at the forefront and will be for the rest of the wear. The other three notes linger in the background, all weaker than before.
The performance is just as good. This lasts a solid eight to ten hours with a big projection for the first two hours. After this period, it recedes but always remains present.
However, its only downfall is that it’s only for cold weather wear. But at least it’s an absolute showstopper for special occasions.
#4 – Guerlain Ideal L’Homme Extreme
The first five minutes are all about sweet, juicy, and tart plum. Does it make this scent unique? Yes, very. But be careful. It may make your nose pucker for a little bit.
Coating the edges are warm and sweet spices to keep things interesting. Some wafts of leather and tobacco are in the background, but nothing worth mentioning.
After these first five minutes, the juiciness becomes more reminiscent of a dried fruit. It maintains the sweetness, and in comes a noticeable nutty leather with spices sprinkled on top.
It takes a while, but as the scent dries down, most of the wear is a heavy tobacco note, with the other notes lingering in the background from before. This is what you’ll smell for the rest of the wear.
The performance is alright. It lasts six to seven hours on the skin with light projection. It does well the first couple of hours, but it fades after this.
As for seasons, this is best for cool and cold temperatures and is great to stand out for special events.
#3 – Dolce & Gabbana The One EDP
You might actually hurt yourself when wearing Dolce & Gabbana EDP. The first time I wore it, I sprayed it on my neck. It smelt so good that I kept turning my head to get a sniff.
By the end of the day, my neck was sore and nearly strained. This experience speaks to the quality of the scent. And why it is claimed as one of the sexiest colognes for men.
The opening is a fleeting citrus hit but is quickly overpowered by a tidal wave of warm spices. For the first two hours, spices dominate. Nuances of amber and tobacco are peaking in from the base but aren’t prevalent.
After two hours, the dry-down starts and is the best part of the fragrance. At this point, you’ll understand why it’s a sexy fragrance.
The spices tone down, and amber and tobacco are in equal parts. There is some sweetness, but it is primarily warm and inviting. This trio dominates for the rest of wear and is why Dolce and Gabbana The One EDP is so popular.
The performance is not great, but it’s incredibly wearable. On a date, you don’t want a fragrance to be announced. It should be discovered. Allow her to get faint whiffs of the sexy smell and want to come closer.
I recommend Dolce and Gabbana The One EDP as a must-have fragrance. It is a masculine cologne that you can’t go wrong with.
#2 – Parfums de Marly Herod
The first spray is an exceptional dose of warmth. Denoted from dominant tobacco and rich, sweet vanilla. Laying the background is a blend of cinnamon and pepper.
The cinnamon is most noticeable, pairing perfectly with the tobacco and vanilla combination.
As for the pepper, it makes my nose tinge, but it’s not overpowering. Just enough to let you know it’s there.
As the scent dries, the notes settle in quite nicely. Making it harder to specifically pick out individual notes.
However, the overall scent has gotten darker. The tobacco note has gotten more prominent, and the spices have retained the same degree of “punch.”
There is a degree of incense or labdanum enveloping the edges. The smell is hard to describe, but it is smoky without the smell of smoke. It’s more of a comforting ambiance that sparks curiosity.
The spices have lingered in the background 15-20 minutes into the wear. The enveloping edges have faded.
At this point, the tobacco notes dominance is waning. It transcends into a sea of prominent, rich, warm vanilla.
Once in the dry down, vanilla pairs perfectly with tobacco. Only becoming slightly more dominant. In the background are wafts of cinnamon that have reappeared. This trio is a warm and rich base for the rest of the wear.
This lasts nine hours on the skin with moderate projection. It pushes out an arm’s length or more for the first two to three hours.
After this period, it recedes to a soft ambiance for the rest of the wear. This is fall and winter wear and shines on dates.
#1 – Daniel Josier Ambre Tabac
Fruity and sweet bergamot leads before a dominant tobacco and amber duo wash over it. I can’t smell the bergamot a few minutes in, but it left its sweetness. Its citric nature was only there to grab attention.
In the background is a subtle cinnamon spice. Instead of donating an intense spiciness, it breaks up the depth of tobacco and amber.
This duo will lead the mid, where it will meet warm vanilla. I’ll tell you right now. This is a sweet scent at this point. Is it overwhelming? No. It is charming and alluring. The overarching emphasis is warmth as this trio heads into the dry down.
Patchouli is the final addition. It brings woody and earthy additions, taking the warmth in a darker direction. When it is added, it’s the focal point but soon recedes.
The rest of the wear is the previous dominant trio, with woody patchouli nuances.
In the warmer months, Ambre Tabac is too strong, but when winter rolls around. This scent is ready to go.
FAQs
Is Tobacco A Good Fragrance?
Tobacco fragrances are some of the best for men. Why? Many have the masculinity and stand-out factor of a leather fragrance but are much more wearable and less decisive.
Tobacco does get a bad stereotype because of it being used in cigarettes and cigars. However, these don’t smell like that. Sure, some better ones smell like the real dried thing, but you will never smell like a smoker.
What Are The Scents Of Tobacco?
There are a few different scents of tobacco. The best one is sweet or cherried tobacco. This smells like the real thing, not like a smoker, but still charming and attractive. These tend to be the most attractive tobacco scents.
The next one is dry or pipe tobacco. Of all tobacco scents, this one smells the most authentic to a cigar or cigarette if you were to put your nose up to it. These tend to be the most masculine tobacco scents.
The next are tobacco blossom and tobacco leaf. Versace The Dreamer is a great tobacco blossom fragrance. It has the qualities of dry tobacco but with heavy floral accents.
Whereas tobacco leaf is herbal. These tend to be bright because their herbal qualities do “push out” a little bit better.
Is There A Cologne That Smells Like Pipe Tobacco?
Yes, any tobacco fragrances on this list that aren’t too sweet or herbal will smell like pipe tobacco.
Final Words
The final burning question is, are tobacco fragrances worth it? Yes, of course. I am not the biggest fan of tobacco leaf or blossom scents, but I’ll never be able to live without the pipe and cherried tobacco scents.
They are worth having because they give the masculinity and stand-out factor of leather fragrances but aren’t so hard to wear and decisive at times.
If you are getting into tobacco colognes and don’t know where to start, I recommend Dolce and Gabbana The One EDP.
