Table of Contents
#5 – Davidoff Cool Water EDT
The opening is ultra-aromatic. This is from a blend of lavender, mint, and other greens.
None of these notes specifically stick out over others, as the scent is quite balanced. The general idea is fresh with an invigorating kick. All of this sits on an aquatic background.
After the first few minutes, the scent stays quite similar. The lavender is becoming more prominent, lending a subtle floral and clean nuance.
Over time, it comes to dominate the heart of the fragrance. It is important to note that, at this point, it picks up an old-school masculine accent.
Delicate, sweet accents add to the authentic lavender as it develops. The base has an enticing dose of musk paired with greener aromatic accords from before.
This is definitely a simple and linear scent. There are musky and green accents here and there. However, the primary focus is marine accords playing second fiddle to prominent aromatic tones.
Cool Water lasts six to seven hours on my skin with light projection. The first one to two hours, it pushes out a couple of feet.
After this period, it recedes closer to the skin, becoming a skin scent. It is exclusively late spring and all summer wear for all occasions.
#4 – Mont Blanc Explorer
Upon the first spray is a blast of semi-sweet, fruity bergamot. After about 5 minutes, the scent starts to smell more like Aventus. Bergamot fades, and a heavy dose of ambroxan and woody notes peak through.
Ambroxan adds a noticeably synthetic smell, but both notes emphasize a woody accord. Explorer is a straightforward scent. Any other notes in the fragrance only amplify the fruity opening or woody dry down.
Does Mont Blanc Explorer’s scent profile smell like Creed Aventus? It has the bare bones of it. Both have a fruity opening, but Aventus is known for its juicy, tangy pineapple opening.
As for the dry down, Explorer lacks the signature smoky birch. So, yes, similar scent DNA, but 9 times out 10, people can tell the difference.
This lasts seven hours on the skin, with average projection. It pushes out two to three feet for the first two hours. After this period, it becomes a skin scent. This is all-season and occasion wearable.
#3 – Armaf Club de Nuit Intense Man EDT
There’s no way the opening doesn’t capture your attention. It starts with an enormous blast of bergamot, pineapple, and bergamot.
The pineapple is definitely the most prominent, contributing an intense juicy tone similar to Aventus.
The lemon and a masculine depth are in the background. I can’t particularly pick out a specific note. Still, it has a subtle leatheriness that is present now and in the mid.
At this point, the only downfall is that the citruses are slightly synthetic. Never off-putting, but it smells like what it costs.
The smoky woods and musk start to come through after half an hour while retaining the fresh citruses from the opening.
The off-putting synthetic-ness has dissipated, and at this point, Intense Man EDT is a much more enjoyable scent.
These notes settle into each other for a couple of hours and smooth out. All while retaining the masculine and invigorating touches from before.
The rest of the wear is smoky birch with ambergris and musk. The fresh accents remain from the citruses’ top notes, but the specific notes have faded.
How good are the longevity and projection? Excellent, with two to three sprays, it lasts 10 – 12 hours on the skin, and projection can fill a room. It can be worn for all seasons or occasions but may struggle in the winter.
#2 – Versace Dylan Blue
It has a fresh shower gel vibe. The top notes are a citrus combination of bergamot and grapefruit. They are sweet and familiar. Resting underneath is an aquatic accord and ambroxan.
All last for the rest of the wear.
The citrus duo fades after some time but leaves its sweetness. Once the citruses fade, so does the shower gel vibe. At this point, ambroxan starts to darken with an earthy and spicy nature.
Yet, it never comes across as dirty.
The fresh and sweet aroma heads in a warmer direction. Most of the aquatic nature is gone, and ambroxan is left. It is prevalent but not an ambroxan bomb like Dior Sauvage.
Dylan Blue has above-average longevity and projection. You can spray this on and not worry about it for the rest of the day.
But speaking of sprays, be careful. It doesn’t seem like it’d be too intense, but three sprays are loud.
It’s all-season and occasion versatile. If you live in a climate below 10F (-12C), Dylan Blue will struggle but performs well for the most part.
One of the better parts of Dylan Blue is its uniqueness. It is not hyper-unique but considering blue fragrances. It has its own genre. Many fragrances have similarities, but none are clones.
#1 – Cremo Spice & Black Vanilla
The opening is led by an intense dose of cardamom. It is slightly peppery and not as smooth as in fragrances like YSL La Nuit de L’Homme EDT. However, it’s never off-putting. Within moments, it’s enveloped by warm vanilla.
This is an excellent combination as both are warm and smooth. This combination will dominate into the mid, maintaining the perfect balance between sweet and subdued.
After one to two hours, the vanilla gains a powdery accent. While light vetiver nuances linger into the base and give the fragrance added depth. Vetiver is equal parts woody and slightly aromatic.
The prevalence of cardamom has faded into the base, but the scent retains the invigoring spice. While the vanilla dominates with woody nuances for the rest of the wear.
Spice and Black Vanilla lasts five hours on the skin with light projection. The first spray pushes out a couple of feet and remains present for the rest of the wear. This is fall and winter wear for all occasions.
Final Words
The final burning question is, are Walmart colognes worth it?
Yes. Of course, there are some bad ones. But 80% of the ones I saw were reasonable scents that I recommend to my readers. Worried about affordability? Don’t. Cremo Spice and Black Vanilla is only $20. Others are as high as $50.
