What Does Chopard Oud Malaki Smell Like?

Upon the first spray, there is a fleeting bright citrus. This comes from the top note of grapefruit. Immediately present are tobacco and woody notes. The citrus would have stuck around longer if the other two weren’t so heavy.

The tobacco and woody notes are very strong at first and are soon joined by spices and subtle yet prevalent oud.

If you are familiar with notes, you’ll understand why this bold mixture can be decisive. It may seem like an aggressive opening, but all notes are smooth and well-rounded. Hence, the quality of the craftsmanship.

The general idea for the first 5-10 minutes is a spicy, woody aroma. Then the leather is added. It always keeps the scent in balance but adds depth.

As the scent progresses, the spices start to fade. Oud and tobacco are in equal parts, with leather and “dirty” ambergris in the background. I say “dirty” because it can come off as animalic when combined with leather.

Again, for acquired tastes, don’t blindly buy this. All of this happens while sitting on a woody backbone.

As the dry-down develops, the warmth and depth only become more prominent. This is from the slightly spicy leather and woods becoming more prevalent.

Oud and tobacco are still present but losing strength for the rest of the wear.

Performance

The performance isn’t anything to write home about. It lasts 7 hours on the skin with moderate to light projection. The first few hours, it is a pleasant scent bubble around you.

After this period, it becomes light but never becomes a skin scent.

In the fall and winter, this is a fantastic fragrance to wear. It wouldn’t have made my “Best Winter Colognes” list if it wasn’t. In the warmer times of the year – spring and summer. It is too much.

As for occasions, it’s best special events because of the oud’s sophistication.

Tobacco and oud notes are common in perfumery. But how they are blended here is exceptionally unique. This is one of my favorite parts of the fragrance as it stands out from your typical oud scent.

Oud Malaki is not a mass-appealing scent. It is quite decisive because of its unique note combination. This is best for a person who has some experience with colognes.

If you like the smell, you’ll love the fragrance, but if you don’t, you’ll want your money back.

Is Chopard Oud Malaki Worth It?

Yes. A 2.7oz bottle costs $83 on discounters. The performance is alright, but the smell and uniqueness are completely worth it for the price. You’re guaranteed to stand out in the winter.

History

Chopard Oud Malaki was released in 2012 and perfumed by Dominique Ropion. It is one of a kind for the brand, as there are no flankers.

Final Words

Chopard Oud Malaki is an underrated gem. It is sure to be a signature scent. I particularly enjoy Oud Malakai because parts of the day, you’ll catch wafts of distinct grapefruit, and for other parts of the day, oud and tobacco.

It’s a welcomed mystery at what you’ll smell. Adding to the allure of the fragrance.
