Frederic Malle Promise Review – Do You Need It?

Promise.

One of the longest-lasting fragrances from the brand.

Frederic Malle Promise was released in 2017. It is based on earthy woods, roses, and amber. It lasts 12+ hours on the skin with excellent projection. In this review, I will describe its smell and performance and if it’s worth it.

What Does Frederic Malle Promise Smell Like?

A fruity apple leads the opening with its attention-grabbing nature. There are faint hints of spice in the background, but the first hour is all about the fruitiness. As the scent progresses, it gets “dirtier.” Not that you’ll ever smell uncleanly, but it’s gaining more outdoorsy elements. Specifically, woods and sensual roses.

After an hour, Promise is at its core. Rose is the most dominant but blends perfectly with Cypriol oil and labdanum. If you are unfamiliar, cypriol oil is a very dark and earthy accord. At this point, it’s not at its full strength yet.

The rose is the most prominent note for a few hours and has a delicate sweetness. The apple is wholly gone, and the dry-down starts to develop.

The thing that stands out most about the base is its exceptional dryness. Cyrpriol oil was in the background for the entire wear. As the scent developed, it got uncovered layer by layer until now.

The woodiness washes over the entire fragrance after four to five hours on the skin. I smell a slight tinge of warm ambroxan. But everything else is kicked out.

Performance

Promise lasts 12+ hours on the skin with excellent projection. It has a room-filling projection for the first three to four hours. After this period, it recedes but maintains an arm’s length or more ambiance for the rest of the wear.

The sillage is just as good. This rich, dense fragrance leaves a long scent trail as you move around. The more you move, the better this smells and the further it projects. This performance is with one spray.

This is fall, winter, and early spring wear. As for occasions, it is best for special occasions and shines on dates. You’ll have to moderate your sprays in close-quarter settings as this gets intense. Open areas and rooms do exceptionally well and let this beautiful juice air out.

Lastly, mass appeal and likability are below average. This is a beautiful blend of woods and playful nuances. But… this is a decisive fragrance; you either love it or you hate it, and there’s no grey area.

Frederic Malle Promise Clones

There are a few great clones of the fragrance. I have yet to experience this one. But based on fragrantica, the most similar is Oud Aquilaria Omanluxury.

Final Words

The final burning question is, is Frederic Malle Promise worth it? You need to try a sample or decant first. This is one of the worst blind-buy fragrances.

All of the notes are super high-quality and well-blended. Even though it is expensive, you get what you pay for. Its only downfall is its decisiveness. I don’t personally enjoy Cypriol Oil in any fragrance, so this didn’t fair well to my nose.

Even though I didn’t particularly enjoy the fragrance, I can still appreciate this as an art form.
