Jazz Club

A simple but unique scent. Neroli leads the opening with a floral citric tone. It keeps the scent fresh while nuances of pink pepper spice grab my attention in the background. They are sweeter than sharp. This fresh spice will lead into the mid.

The tobacco and boozy duo washes over the lighter top notes. The sweet rum note is in my face without restraint from the beginning.

After a few minutes, the boozy rum gets sweeter and warmer. The tobacco note plays second fiddle. It is not a ripe leaf or herbaceous. Instead, it heads in a woodier direction – what you’d smell in a Jazz Club.

The tobacco depth will take sweet rum into the dry down. At this point, the two will play second fiddle while powdery vanilla washes over. The rest of the wear is sweet rum and vanilla atop a tobacco depth.

Performance

I’ve doused myself in this, and the projection never got better. It only got more intense around me. I don’t recommend spraying more than five sprays, as you’ll be wasting sprays. This fragrance is strictly cool and cold weather wear. I can guarantee you this is not a fragrance you want to wear in the heat.

What’s the best part? It’s extremely seductive. This fragrance is built on the backbone of masculine and alluring. This combination creates an irresistible aroma.

  • Longevity: 6 – 7 hours
  •  Projection: Intimate
  •  Seasons: Fall & Winter
  •  Occasions: Formal & Dates

By The Fireplace

The opening leads with a big puff of smoky accords, almost like burning matches. You probably think you don’t want to smell like a campfire, but it is far from that. Warm spice nuances add to the smoke, and the duo leads into a gourmand vanilla flair.

Vanilla is slightly sweet and powdery. More importantly, it is an excellent contrast to the smokiness.

Smoky vanilla is a bulk of the scent, but slowly, the smoke accords fade. The vanilla is retained and gains a warmer nature from additional balsamic notes. If you are unfamiliar, balsamic means warm and resinous. In the background are woodsy tones that never take over.

The rest of the wear is all about the vanillic nature with wafts of wood, smoke, and balm.

Performance

The longevity and projection of this are straightforward. If you want better performance, you can apply heavier. This is nice as it gives you the ability to spray moderately. Like Jazz Club, the seasonality is strict. This is not a fragrance you want to wear in the fall and winter.

I can guarantee you from experience two sprays in 65F weather will make you nauseous. Its wearability was the biggest surprise when I first tried it. This moderate projector blends in well enough that it’s never too overwhelming in close-quarter settings as long as you don’t overspray.

  • Longevity: 7-8 Hours
  •  Projection: Moderate
  •  Seasons: Fall & Winter
  •  Occasions: All

Final Words

I sit behind my computer. The cursor is beeping. My thoughts: “How do I choose between these two?” Both fragrances have a gourmand and alluring flair. On top of this, they’re both exclusively fall and winter wear.

They differ in how they present the alluring nature. By the Fireplace is all about smoky woods and vanilla. Jazz Club is a dark rum, tobacco, and vanilla combination. The occasions and projection are the next eye-throbbing difference.

On dates, Jazz Club will be a better choice because of the projection. But on all other occasions, By The Fireplace is a much easier reach. You could call Jazz Club hard to wear even though it’s not necessarily decisive.

My final decision comes down to both personal preference and performance. Just because I’m picking one fragrance over the other doesn’t make the other bad; it’s just not the best for most people.

By The Fireplace is the winner. I love smoky fragrances, which hits the nail on the head in that department. As for the versatility, it is slightly easier to wear.

Do you love these types of fragrances? Me too. Check out this review of Maison Francis Kurkdjian Grand Soir. It is the perfect combination of amber and vanilla.
