Tom Ford Black Orchid Parfum Review – Do You Need It?

Black Orchid Parfum.

A deeper version of the original.

Tom Ford Black Orchid Parfum was released in 2020. It is based on earthy florals and woods. It lasts 12+ hours on the skin with intense projection. In this review, I will describe its smell and performance and if it’s worth it.

What Does Tom Ford Black Orchid Parfum Smell Like?

Deep and rich are recurring themes throughout the scent. Upon the first spray, you’re hit with a blast of florals – ylang-ylang and black orchids. They have a floral smell to them but are also significantly sweet. Sometimes it even comes across as fruity. Soon after, enters the bulk of the scent.

The duo of truffle and black plum is significantly earthy. Yet, never do they come across as dirty. This aspect is retained for the rest of the wear. After some time, sweet rum washes over the earthy duo, toning down the decisive property.

The rum is short-lived but leads into the base. Woody patchouli is the final addition and works hand in hand with the earthy duo.

Performance

The performance is as good as the smell. It lasts 12+ hours on the skin with intense projection. Instead of being room-filling, it leaves a dense scent trail. As you move around, this extends ten-plus feet behind you. Scent bubble-wise, it’s multiple feet, but again more about the trail.

The scent notes, and big projection inhibits its versatility. Black Orchid Parfum is exclusively for fall and winter wear. In the heat of the summer, the florals and rum notes become cloying. On top of this, the already big projection gets more intense.

As for occasions, it’s exclusively for formal events. It’s not great for office wear or other close-quarter settings because it is intense. It has the allure for a date, but you’d have to put half a spray on. Plus, the scent profile is decisive and may be off-putting for your date.

The mass appeal and likability are black or white. Like the original, others will either love or hate the smell, and there’s no in-between. This is definitely a fragrance you wear for yourself. Because if you don’t have the confidence to wear it, it will wear you.

Final Words

On the Tom Ford Official Website, a 100mL bottle costs $275. This is slightly pricey but as expected for a fragrance of this quality and from the Tom Ford brand. In short, Tom Ford Black Orchid Parfum is worth it.

But the real question is, should you own the EDP or Parfum version, or are either worth owning? My biggest hesitation with the Black Orchid line is its lack of versatility. These fragrances are useful for formal events two to three months out of the year. And for me, I only have two or three formal events a year in the winter.

As for the EDP vs. Parfum version, the most significant difference is that the Parfum version is slightly darker with better performance.

With this said, the scent and performance are certainly worth it. But it’s up to you to decide if the smell and performance are good enough to negate the lack of versatility.

If you try Tom Ford Black Orchid Parfum, I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
