Polo Black EDT
An intense burst of sweet and fruity Mango leads the opening with a fresh tangerine note in the background. Unlike common Mandarin notes, tangerine has more tartness. It isn’t off-putting, but it gives the scent a unique twist.
Together, these two dominate the first 15 – 20 minutes, amplifying the tropical aroma. The only thing about the opening is that the Mango can often come across as synthetic and overstay its welcome.
After a few minutes, the opening is tamed by an aromatic patchouli. It comes across mainly with a light herbal-ness and hint of earthiness, as you’d find in a typical patchouli note.
The mid is fleeting, and the dry-down begins soon after the initial spray. A sandalwood and tonka bean combination takes over the base with warm, smooth, and woody accents. The rest of the citruses are weakening, and the woods are becoming stronger but drier.
Polo Black is a linear scent mainly because of the “one layer” of notes. Yet, it still has enough development that you won’t get bored.
On the skin, it lasts five to six hours with average to light projection. Pushing out two feet for an hour or so before receding. This is spring, summer, and fall wear for the office and casual situations.
Polo Double Black
Warm pepper spices are at the forefront of the opening. It is paired with a more subtle coffee and wood combination. There are faint wafts of nutmeg, but they play into the greater whole of warm spices.
Within a few minutes, Mango and juniper berry come through. They are aromatic, fruity, and sweet but subdued by the coffee, pepper, and nutmeg notes. There are sweeter faucets in the mid, but the fruitiness is less prevalent.
Unique mocha touches add to the coffee note, taking you into the dry down. The base notes have created an earthiness that pairs with the remaining spices and sweet woods. This is what you’ll smell for the rest of the wear.
The performance isn’t great. It lasts four to five hours on the skin; with intimate projection, it never pushes out more than a foot before it becomes a skin scent. This is fall, winter, and spring wear for all occasions.
Final Words
I’ll start with their smell. Double Black is all about warm spices in the opening. At the same time, the original Black is significantly sweeter with a much more prominent mango note. Both scents finish with a similar idea. Dry and slightly earthy woods with lingering freshness.
However, early in the wear and, the heart of Double Black has a prominent coffee note. It gives the fragrance slightly more depth and darkness and a more alluring aroma than the original.
Double Black is a slightly worse performer, but the original Black is already poor enough that it’s almost negligible.
The final burning question is, which Polo Black is better? Double Black is the better fragrance. Why? It is more mature and alluring. It has the coffee note that grabs a lot more attention and lacks the potentially cloying sweetness.
After you try Polo Black EDT and Double Black, I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
