Bleu de Chanel vs. Versace Eros.
Two of the most popular fragrances for men.
This review will compare Bleu de Chanel and Versace Eros. I will detail each fragrance’s smell, performance, and anything else you need to know. In the end, I’ll break apart their similarities and differences and let you know which is best.
There are many Eros and Bleu de Chanel concentrations, but this review focuses on the EDP versions. In my expert opinion, they are best from each line, excluding Eros Flame. I will warn you right now that these are two vastly different fragrances. If you want more detail, keep reading :-).

Bleu de Chanel
Right off the top is a sharp blast of citric grapefruit. Followed by a blend of spicy notes. My nose picks up mostly zingy ginger and some pink pepper. Other spicy notes are in the mix but not strong enough to be identifiable. All of this is supported by a warm, amber background.
Citruses still dominate in the mid. At this point, fresh woody notes emerge. The most prominent is cedar, followed by some sandalwood. The bed of amber gets significantly stronger but does not overpower the other notes. From here on, the scent heads in a warmer and smoother direction.
The citruses are infused with smoky incense. While supported by subtle woody accords, it rests on a deep amber base with sweet accents.
The dry-down has less amber. This allows for sandalwood and cedar to shine. They are creamy and clean, with touches of fresh citruses lingering throughout.
The longevity and projection are above average. Five sprays will last you a workday and then some. No matter the season or occasion, it performs well. It is not unique, but it smells outstanding and works for everything.
Versace Eros
You’re immediately hit with the signature Eros mint. Is it spicy? Yes, but it has been tamed and more well-rounded. A sweet candied apple, vanilla combination, and subtle citruses play second fiddle in the background. The overarching emphasis is invigorating and fresh.
In the background are wafts of ambroxan with ambery and musky nuances. It gives Eros EDP considerable depth and warmth.
The citruses fade as the wear continues. Sweet vanilla fills the void. The candied apple from before still contributes a sweet accent, but the vanilla has gotten significantly stronger. There aren’t too many powdery nuances; it is smooth and well-rounded.
The dry down is the better part of the fragrance. The ambery ambroxan from before has gotten stronger. And there has been an addition of warm sandalwood and rich leather nuances that smooth over the scent.
The rest of the wear is prominent sweet vanilla and warm woods with subtle amber and leather nuances smoothing out the fragrance.
Versace Eros EDP lasts seven to eight hours on the skin with above-average projection. It pushes out three feet for the first three hours. After this period, it recedes, never becoming a skin scent. This is all-season and occasion wear. Yet, take it lighter in the high heat.
Comparison
Scent
The only similarity these fragrances have is their use of spicy mint. Bleu de Chanel is fresh, spicy, and aromatic, with a woody backbone in the opening. Eros is much sweeter. It has the spicy and aromatic mint, but all these notes sit atop a warm and sweet vanilla backbone.
After the first half an hour, Bleu de Chanel is all about fresh and warm woods. There is a combination of cedar and Iso E Super. Sure, there are some spicy nuances and aromatics, but not much.
Eros gets warmer in the dry-down but stays bright and inviting. Bleu de Chanel is warm but dark and mysterious. Eros’ dry-down is all about sensual vanilla, ambroxan, and subtle woods.
In short, Bleu de Chanel is a wood-based fragrance. Eros is a vanilla-based fragrance.
Performance
They are both great performers for their occasions. Bleu de Chanel lasts longer but with lighter projection. The entire wear is present but never overwhelming; it will always be discovered and never announced. it’s more difficult to overwhelm with Bleu de Chanel than Eros.
Eros is intense the first few hours. This will make your presence known and leave a long, heavy scent trail. You could walk past someone, and they’re still getting wafts ten feet away. The longevity is slightly shorter, but nothing you’d consider poor performance.
It’s easy to break down Eros’ and Bleu de Chanel’s performance differences; however, it’s not an important factor to consider for these two. Both are perfectly tuned to their respective occasions.
Versatility
This is the aspect that drastically deviates between the two fragrances. Eros was popularized for clubbing and going out. With spray moderation, you can pull it off in the office and on all other occasions. Yet, this is playful and promiscuous.
Bleu de Chanel is all about quiet and confident seduction. This is the best date night blue fragrance but much more wearable for the office and other occasions as it’s more gentlemanly and mature. You would never wear Bleu de Chanel for going out because the projection isn’t loud enough.
Somewhat of a side note, I’m in college as I write this. All fragrance forums talk about how Dior Sauvage is the most used and popular line. However, Versace Eros is ALL I smell. For every ten guys wearing Eros, only one is wearing Sauvage.
Consider this if you want to stand out – not that Bleu de Chanel is mega-unique either.
Final Words
The final burning question is, is Bleu de Chanel or Versace Eros better? Neither. Both are good in their own right. Each fragrance is high-quality, a good performer, compliment-pulling, versatile, and around the same price.
So, how do you make the decision? Based on your personality. I am more of a quiet guy. I will always go on a date before I go out, clubbing, etc… Thus, Bleu de Chanel is a more wearable fragrance for me. The same can be said for you if you have the same personality.
If you’re more of a going-out type, Eros will be your more wearable fragrance.
After you try Versace Eros and/or Bleu de Chanel, I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
