How Does YSL Describe It?
Here is the product description, “Bright, masculine freshness combines with sophistication and nonchalance to create a fresh, yet deep and mysterious scent with notes of cardamom, cedar, and coumarin—a structure of contrasting forces. A story of intensity, bold sensuality, and seduction that lies halfway between restraint and abandon.”
What Does YSL La Nuit de L’Homme EDT Smell Like?
Well, this is a linear scent. The opening is a mix of sweetness and spicy freshness with woody undertones. Upon the first spray is a fleeting hit of bright bergamot. It doesn’t fade, but it does get shoved aside by cardamom.
Which by all means is the star of the show. It is mostly warm and spicy but has freshness when combined with bergamot.
After a few minutes, the bergamot is washed over by a more prominent lavender. It fuses with dominant cardamom, and the two run the show for most of the wear while resting on a fresh, woody cedar.
I mentioned that there is sweetness, and there is, but no note donates a heavy dose. It lingers in the background and accompanies the top notes. Never does it become sugary, but rather charmingly masculine.
Into the dry down, it is still all about dominant cardamom and lavender. The woodiness has gotten slightly stronger. I attribute this to the addition of vetiver. It is faint but strong enough to create a darker, woody accord.

Performance
The performance is excellent for what La Nuit de L’Homme is meant to do. It lasts 7 – 8 hours on the skin, with intimate projection. Yet, this is by design as this is a special occasion fragrance that should be discovered, not announced.
I made a video in one of my YouTube shorts, “How Many Sprays of YSL La Nuit de L’Homme EDT?” I said seven or more, but it doesn’t really matter because this is such a light fragrance.
I’ve just eluded to its wearability, and that’s true. It best fits special occasions like formal events and especially dates. Yet, this light and likable fragrance could be worn casually or to the office. It just won’t perform well in those situations.
Seasons? Exclusively the cold weather, fall and winter. I’ve worn this in the high heat of summer, and that’s one way you can get it to project much better, but I wouldn’t recommend it.
Lastly, likability. I’m sure you’ve probably been able to put together that this is an extremely likable fragrance. It garners compliments and big smiles like nobody’s business. If you’re looking for a fragrance as likable as a blue fragrance but not one, this is the perfect choice.
Is YSL La Nuit de L’Homme EDT Worth It?
Yes. This is perfect if you’re looking for a fragrance to impress. It smells fantastic and has the right performance to work in those types of situations.
However, I’ll highlight some cons that pop into mind. It has no versatility unless used for the aforementioned. Second, Dolce & Gabbana The One EDP has the same attraction factor for $30 less.
YSL La Nuit de L’Homme EDT is worth it solely from its scent. But beware of other options.
How Do The People Rate YSL La Nuit de L’Homme EDT?
Don’t just trust me; what do the masses think? This information is pulled from fragrantica.com. Providing a general estimate of what others think. At the time of writing, La Nuit de L’Homme EDT has 16,957 votes with a rating of 4.44 stars out of 5. Based on the cost-for-value metric, it is rated as neutral.
Here are the top three pros and cons:
PROS
- Gorgeous, sexy, manly, charming and sophisticated scent
- Unique and exceptional fragrance
- Great for special occasions and romantic settings
CONS
- Below average longevity and sillage
- YSL accused of irresponsible reformulations to save money and sell more bottles
- Terrible performance compared to older formulations

History
YSL has a long track record when it comes to creating fragrances. The La Nuit de L’Homme line is very popular, but the most notable is the Y line.
YSL La Nuit de L’homme EDT was released in 2009 and perfumed by Anne Flipo, Dominique Ropion, and Pierre Wargyne. This was the original La Nuit de L’Homme, flanked by multiple other versions. Bleu Electrique, the most notable, was even better but, unfortunately, has been discontinued.
My Experience With YSL La Nuit de L’Homme EDT
All of the above information is my experience with YSL La Nuit de L’Homme EDT. However, I keep it as objective as possible. This way, you can objectively decide if this is a fragrance you want to purchase or if you’re comparing a few fragrances. Thus, this section is my subjective opinion.
I absolutely love YSL La Nuit de L’Homme EDT. It is one of my first choices for date night and even sometimes just for lounging around the house. The cardamom in the fragrance smells traditional but of higher quality, with the same prominent spicy accent but smoother.
It’s also extremely simple, so it always smells consistent with every wear.
Side Note: Not that scents change from day to day, but the more notes, the more possibility for variation.
The only downfall is the weak projection. Yes, it’s best for a date, but even then, it’s a bit weak. Hence, you have to coat yourself in sprays for others to be able to smell you.

How Many Sprays Should I Apply?
Seven or more. The projection is so light that it doesn’t really matter. You’ll have to experiment with this fragrance to see what works for you.
Has There Been a YSL La Nuit de L’Homme EDT Reformulation?
Potentially, it is said that there was a dramatic change after 2015. Unfortunately, I don’t have an old formulation to compare to. However, I will say that reformulation is common practice for fragrance manufacturers. And the version we have now is all we get, so it is what it is.

Outside of the La Nuit de L’Homme line, Riflesso Trussardi.
Final Words
YSL La Nuit de L’Homme EDT is one of my favorite date night fragrances. There’s something about the cardamom that is done uniquely and more intriguingly.
I wouldn’t call this a must-have fragrance, as other date night fragrances are cheaper. Yet, if I rebuilt my collection, I would include YSL La Nuit de L’Homme EDT.
Overall, an outstanding scent and one worth the money if you decide to buy it.
